Ascot Racecourse

Henley Royal Regatta is undoubtedly the best known regatta in the world and is both one of the highlights of the summer sporting calendar and the social season. The first Grand Prix at Silverstone was held in 1948, an estimated 100,000 people flocked to see Luigi Villoresi drive from the back of the grid to beat a field of 22 others in his Maserati with an average speed of 72.2mph. Silverstone racing history had begun. Silverstone has a capacity of 150,000 people. Twickenham Stadium, the Home of England Rugby. Seating an impressive 82,000 spectators, Twickenham is the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world. The ground started life as 10 and 1/4 acre market garden in Twickenham. In 1907 it was bought for £5,500 12s and 6d. The first stands were constructed the following year. Before the ground was bought, it was actually used to grow cabbages, and so Twickenham Stadium is affectionately known as the ‘Cabbage Patch’. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race run on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse. Another prestigious horse racing event that draws large crowds. The race is run over a distance of 3 miles, 2½ furlongs (5,331m), and during its running there are 22 fences to be jumped. The first organised Flat race meeting in Cheltenham took place in 1815 on Nottingham Hill. Racing’s popularity soared over the next decade with crowds of 30,000 visiting the racecourse for its annual two day July meeting featuring the Gold Cup.
