This year The Open at Cheltenham Racecourse is on the 13th to the 15th November. Its going to be a fabulous three day event which many racegoers consider to be the first weekend that Jump racing really gets underway – and our chauffeur team are sure to be booked up early for travel to this prestigious sporting event.
So what’s in store this year?
Friday 13th November – Countryside Day
Countryside Day is one of the most popular days of the season, it has a unique country fair atmosphere and it really is a true celebration of the best of British countryside.
The highlight of the day is to be the unveiling of the new £45 million Grandstand by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal at 11.30am. The new Grandstand, complete with offering bars, restaurants and private boxes to racegoers, will then be opened to the public. The new 6,500-capacity, five and a half storey grandstand replaces an older building that was built during the 1920s.
There are six races to enjoy, 4 chase and 2 hurdle:
1.15pm – The Opus Energy Amateur Riders Handicap Steeple Chase – 3miles
1.50pm – The Paddy Power Handicap Chase – 2miles
2.25pm – The Steel Plate and Sections Novices’ Steeple Chase (Class B) – 2miles
3.00pm – The Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle Race (Grade 2) – 2miles
3.35pm – The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Steeplechase – 3miles
4.05pm – The Mallard Pawnbrokers and Family Jewellers Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race – 2miles
The feature race of the day is the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase over Cheltenham’s unique cross country course. This was won last year by the Cheltenham favourite – Balthazar King.
There will be the usual annual parade by the local hunts plus recently retired, 20 times champion jockey AP McCoy, will try his hand at dressage alongside Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin.
Saturday 14th November – Paddy Power Gold Cup Day
The Paddy Power Gold Cup has taken place every year since 1960 and many consider it to be the most exciting racing this side of Christmas. The Paddy Power Gold Cup Day is an immensely popular raceday at Cheltenham and with the prize money for the day totalling over £300,000, it’s sure to draw huge crowds of racegoers to the course, keen to enjoy a spectacular day out.
12.40pm – The JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial (Grade 2) – 2 miles
1.15pm – The Cheltenham Club Novices’ Steeple Chase – 3 miles
1.50pm – The Murphy Group Handicap Steeple Chase (Grade 3) – 3 miles
2.25pm – The Paddy Power Gold Cup Steeple Chase (Grade 3) – 2 miles
3.00pm – The Open Handicap Hurdle Race (Listed) – 3 miles
3.35pm – The Open Intermediate Handicap Hurdle Race – 2 miles
4.05pm – The Jockey Club Venues Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed) – 2 miles
Sunday 15th November – Open Sunday
This is a fantastic family day out and is the only Sunday on the racing calendar at Cheltenham. There will be racing as well as a host of free entertainment for children.
1.00pm – The Open Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race – 2 miles
1.35pm – The Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle Race (Grade 2) – 2 miles
2.10pm – The Racing Post Arkle Trophy Trial Novices Steeple Chase (Grade 2) – 2miles
2.40pm – The Shloer Steeple Chase (Listed Race) – 2miles
3.15pm – The StanJames.com Greatwood Hurdle Race (a Handicap) (Grade 3) – 2 miles
3.50pm – The “High Sheriff of Gloucestershire’s” Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed) – 2 miles
